October's top 5 hero beauty products
I thought I would write my first beauty post as I have been using a few products recently that have just been absolute saviors to my various beauty bothers.
The first of my recent hero products is because I have been having some problems with dry skin around my nose and on my chin and have subsequently had a few break outs in these areas too. My skin also became very sensitive and slightly red and slightly agitated. My normal moisturiser just wouldn't cut it as I didn't feel it was moisturising the dry patches and felt it was worsening the slightly agitated redness that was randomly appearing just to add to my dryness misery.
So here it is...my first hero product
Oilatum is a brand that I had never noticed until pixiwoo started gushing about it in their videos as a great moisturiser for dry skin. I have combination skin and therefore this moisturiser is too rich for me on a daily basis however the natural plant lipids help to repair the skins natural barrier therefore helping to nourish irritated, dry and sensitive skin. It feels similar to aqueous cream although not quite as thick and gloopy. Oilatum have a wide variety of products in their range including scalp treatment shampoo, shower gel, bath emollient and body moisturiser all offering damage repair qualities in a more natural form.
As I said Oilatum face cream is too rich for me to use everyday but it has been great as a small skin saviour and priced at under £8 its a nice small price tag too meaning you can continue to buy your normal luxury moisturisers and have Oilatum face cream on stand by for those skin emergencies. I have a funny feeling I am going to be reaching for it a lot in the winter when my skin is weather-beaten and particularly dry.
As far as my hair and I are concerned the next product should wear and cape and fly it is that heroic. Back in June I decided to go from brunette to blonde but with a dip-dye effect (i.e. Caroline Flack style). This involved heavily bleaching of the ends of my hair and then fading the colour upwards leaving the roots my normal dark brown colour. Expectantly this left my hair as dry as a bone and it got so bad that after washing my hair I could barely get a brush through it. Despite investing in expensive shampoos and conditioners no improvements were appearing with the condition of my hair so I resorted back to my old faithful Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense Cheveux Epais Treatment for Dry Hair. I had used this product several times in the past and had always noticed how wonderful my hair felt after using it but had forgotten just how good! After using this product my hair feels soft, well conditioned, looks shiny and needless to say a brush just glides through.
The thick cream mask, combined with lipids and and proteins provides intense nourishment and moisture leaving the hair supple and shiny. This mask is widely available in hair salons and can also be found on several beauty websites including Lookfantastic.com for £21.50
That's skin and taken care of but don't neglect the hands and this is by far the best hand moisturiser I have ever used! I have quite dry skin on my hands but hate greasy creams and have a severe allergic reaction to anything with lanolin in it so this hand cream is perfect for me. The Norwegian formula hand cream by Neutrogena is available in most pharmacists and boots as well as superdrug and main supermarkets and is reasonably priced at less than £5. You only a tiny amount as the cream is so rich and thick yet quick absorbing.

I never thought I would rave about a beauty product that my dad also uses but its true - I learnt about this product from my Dad thanks Dad!
The last 2 products are linked to one common problem - SPOTS. My skin was going through a dodgy week last week and therefore I had to maintain a strict cleansing regime as well as battle those pesky blemishes.
To keep my skin as clear as possible I was fully relying on my Liz Earl Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser. I love this cleanser as it makes taking make up off so easy and quick and my skin feels nice and clean with no tightness afterwards.
With the blemishes I did have to suffer I fought them off with my last October hero product which is Origins Super Spot Remover.
You really only need to put this gel directly on the blemish itself so I apply it with a cotton bud to be precise. It really does sting for a minute or 2 but I kind of like the fact it feels like its working. It is tempting to then start touching your skin and itching around the blemish but don't! Just let it do its magic as it does start to work instantly. If you consistently apply the gel over the particular areas morning and night the blemish just slowly disappears. The Salicylic Acid ingredient also helps to reduce post spot blemishes by working on the deeper layers of skin to reduce the redness left behind. You also hardly need any product at all as it is very powerful so the little bottle although £12 will last for ages.

Hangover Sunday
Life here at 2F3 is a little tender today after a night on the tiles last night. The girls descended on Chop Chop on Morrison street for my friend Suzie's 28th birthday where we devoured a chinese banquet before heading to Guillie-Dhu at Rutland Place for drinks.
Chop chop is a BYO chinese restaurant chain with a more relaxed atmosphere than some other chinese restaurants but a pleasure to dine in none the less. The service was faultless considering we ordered the unlimited banquet for 6 people or more and a constant stream of varied dishes continued to keep on coming even after I had my plate cleared away admitting defeat that I was too full to eat any more. They even saved the day with a sugary coated apple desert including birthday candle when we realised the cake duties had been neglected by everyone!
I would highly recommend Chop Chop for large groups who want to spend less time perusing menus and more time enjoying each others company. The food was delivered efficiently with no fuss and all we had to do was make sure our glasses were topped up and sample all the delicious delights that were put in front of us, and trust me there was a lot!
If you want to check out menus and pricing then go to http://www.chop-chop.co.uk/.
We then piled into taxis and headed for Guillie-Dhu at Rutland Place for some after dinner drinks and a more lively atmosphere. Guillie-Dhu is a traditional Scottish pub/restaurant but hosts ceilidhs every Friday in their function suite upstairs. They host frequent live music events including West End Jam on the last Thursday of every month as well as Halloween and Hogmanay parties.
The pub on ground level features seating booths with private bar service through individual window hatches which I think is particularly handy if there are only 2 of you as it means one is not left on their own while the other queues at the bar. On the other side of the booths is the main bar area where the staff where kilts, the stage showcases musical talents and people have more room for a boogie.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Guillie-Dhu it was absolutely my cup of tea or vodka cranberry as the case was last night. Live music, fun atmosphere, comfortable surroundings with lots of room. The staff were so so friendly even though they were incredibly busy and as usual we were the last people to be kicked out at 3am! Definatley a sign of a great night.

Diary looking empty?
It is 10 weeks until Christmas which means about 11 weeks until new year, have you got your 2012 diary on order yet? If like me just the thought of filling your Calender/diary with entires gets the heart racing then you may be interested in 2 announcements that were made this week.
The first is that Steps are back together and this week announced tour dates for 2012! What? I hear you cry, aren't they too old to sing the cheesy pop fluff that they performed back in the 90's? Well apparently not and from the 2nd April you can catch their matching lycra and robotic dance moves in all its re-rehearsed glory.
Tickets went on sale this morning and there are dates available across the UK and Ireland. Fingers crossed it's not a tragedy... (oh come on I had to).
The 2nd 2012 event announced this week which got me very excited here at 2F3 and tickets were purchased for as quickly as my dodgy broadband and the temperamental website would let me was the Warner brothers Studio Tour 'The Making of Harry Potter.' Finally us muggles don't need to travel all the way to the Harry Potter Wizarding World Theme Park in Orlando Florida to experience a little bit of magic.
The tour includes a 3 hour journey through the studio where the most successful movie series ever was filmed including Dumbledore's office, Griffindor common room and the Great Hall.
As an avid Harry Potter fan I was so eager to snatch up some opening day tickets that I waited with bated breath watching the little Dobby clock countdown the minutes until the tickets were available to buy. However at launch time the website crashed due to site visits and my internet started playing up. I therefore more rationally bought 2 tickets for Friday 13th April much later in the day.
You can buy tickets for this much-anticipated attraction at http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/. Please be aware also that 'The Making of Harry Potter' is not a permanent fixture at Warner Brothers Studio as they will be able to exhibit whatever film is of the moment. I would imagine however that the 'The making of Harry Potter' will be around for a while.
Also if you fancy a Harry Potter bonanza of a day you could also follow the studio tour with the Harry Potter London locations tour. There are several different types which can be seen at http://britmovietours.com/bookings/harry-potter-london-tour/.

World War Z (an oral history of the zombie war)
This was the book that salvaged those last cherished but restless poolside days at the end of my Summer holiday. I had exhausted all my reading material (books, magazines, hotel drafted news bulletins, you name it), had listened to all my Ricky Gervais podcasts twice over and after his shared collection of enticing snippets from Max Brooks World War Z I was reluctantly forced to reach for Steve's available holiday book collection which consisted of that single choice. We rarely gush over the same book and I can recall only one other exception to that rule before WWZ called "A fraction of the whole" by Steve Toltz. But that's for another day.
Max Brooks certainly knows his zombies, in fact if I didn't know better I would have thought he invented the concept... however he also seems to know the current economic, industrial, political, geographical, social and financial state of our world today and therefore turns a very unbelievable and historically humorous topic into something fearful and extremely realistic.
Brooks depicts how a global zombie invasion or the "greatest conflict in history" would affect the lives of our global population through testimonials told from a variety of people for a UN representatives postwar commission report. The UN report writer interviews various members of society including different intelligence organisation agents, army commanders, university professors, right down to individual members of the public which for me conveyed the most "relatable" trials and tribulations the every day common folk would face in such a crisis situation.
The reader gains a full insight into how the world would be affected as the disease spreads from town to country to continent and people are forced to abandon their homes and businesses for colder climes where zombies find it difficult to survive. Or where beaches and ports are swarmed by people trying to escape to the safer waters only to discover they are not safer at all. Some people go underground in the hope Zombies or zed's wont have the sense to follow in pursuit but again there is no limits to where the walking dead will venture.
As the book is narrated in a somewhat interview style for the post war report not only are the gruesome details of the war itself recollected but the long struggle ahead in repairing the damage that is left behind by those long "dark year". The clearing of the waters, the re-population of nations and the ongoing fear that not all have been destroyed...
My main criticism of this book would be the emphasis was much more weighted on military accounts, where details of weaponry and military vehicles and organisations were far too elaborated and slowed the story up dramatically. I seemed to fly through the more personal accounts of one persons struggle as I found them interesting and tense and felt myself deliberating if that was me "what would I do?'. However the more armory based chapters were sometimes a struggle to get through due to military jargon used which I felt was unnecessary sometimes.
All in all this is a unique and thoroughly researched book which paints a picture of the disastrous effects of the dreaded zed's invasion. Just a little politically weighted for me.
The movie is currently being filmed just up the road in Glasgow with Brad Pitt and I'm pretty sure the movie will be a blockbuster hit so if you are one of those people who must read the book before seeing the film (i.e me) then I would definitely make World War Z a must read and see, if only just to prepare you a little if there ever is a zombie invasion... see Brooks even has me believing in them now!
